Bakewell to Hassop Station
Overview
The Monsal Trail is one of Derbyshire’s finest easy walks, following the route of a former Midland Railway line through the heart of the Peak District. This section between Bakewell and Hassop is particularly popular as it combines gentle walking, beautiful countryside views, historic railway heritage and excellent refreshment stops.
Because the route follows the old railway, gradients are minimal, making it suitable for most walkers, families and dog owners.

Starting Point
Bakewell Station Car Park
The easiest starting point is the former Bakewell railway station car park, which provides direct access onto the trail. The car park offers level access and is only a short walk from Bakewell town centre.

The Route
Stage 1 – Bakewell Station to Hassop
From Bakewell Station, simply join the Monsal Trail heading north.
The first part of the walk passes through peaceful Derbyshire countryside with excellent views across fields and limestone hills. The trail surface is wide and generally flat, making for easy progress.
Keep an eye out for:
- Former railway structures
- Stone bridges
- Peak District wildlife
- Panoramic countryside views
The route is completely traffic-free and well signposted throughout. The former railway line now forms part of the 8½-mile Monsal Trail between Bakewell and Chee Dale.
After approximately 1.9 miles you will reach Hassop Station.

The beautifully restored station building is one of the highlights of the walk.
